What is a Form W-3?

Form W-3 is a U.S. tax form used to transmit the information from an employer's Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement, to the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the IRS. Form W-2 is used to report an employee's wages, tips and other compensation, and the taxes withheld from those earnings during the calendar year. Employers are required to provide a copy of the W-2 to the employee and file a copy of the W-2 along with Form W-3 to the SSA and the IRS by the end of January following the end of the calendar year. Form W-3 serves as a transmittal form for the W-2s, it summarizes the total information on all the W-2s submitted to the SSA and the IRS.
